Why Briefcase
Every matter generates documents — client emails, draft motions, research memos, signed exhibits. Briefcase is the one place they all live: organised, versioned, permission-controlled, and instantly accessible to Ask Sque and your team.
Before Briefcase we were chasing attachments across three email threads and a shared drive. Now everything is in one place and the AI can actually read it.

My briefcases vs shared with me
Briefcase has two root views — your own vault and everything colleagues have shared with you.
Files you created or uploaded. You control sharing, folder structure, and deletion.
Files colleagues shared with you. Access follows matter permissions — losing matter access removes briefcase access too.
Folders, datasets, and files
Briefcase supports three levels of organisation inside each vault.
| Type | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Folder | Standard directory for grouping files | Draft versions, correspondence batches |
| Dataset | Structured collection with schema support | Review table sources, bulk imports |
| File | Any uploaded document (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, image) | Exhibits, memos, signed agreements |

Ask Sque and Artifacts integration
Briefcase is not just storage — it connects to the rest of the product.
Reference any briefcase file in chat with @filename. The model reads the full document before responding.
AI-generated outputs — summaries, drafts, tables — can be saved to Briefcase directly from the Artifacts library with Add to Briefcase.
Storage limits and plans
Each plan includes a firm-wide storage limit. A usage banner appears in Briefcase when you approach the cap. Upgrade from Settings → Subscriptions.
Individual file size limit is 100 MB. For larger files, split them into sections or use the dataset import flow for structured data.
FAQ
Who can see files I upload?
Only you — until you share them. Sharing always respects matter permissions; removing someone from a matter automatically revokes their briefcase access for that matter.
Can I download the whole briefcase?
Individual files can be downloaded. Bulk export is on the roadmap.
Can clients access Briefcase?
Not directly. Share specific files with clients via Spaces — the client portal gives them a controlled view.
What file types are supported?
PDF, DOCX, DOC, XLSX, XLS, images, and plain text. Additional formats are added regularly.
